Medical Certification FAQ

What documentation should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your valid driver's license, a complete list of current medications with dosages, and any medical records or waivers related to chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or sleep apnea.

How long will my DOT medical certificate be valid?

Most certificates are valid for 24 months. However, the medical examiner may issue a certificate for a shorter duration, such as 12 months, if you have health conditions that require regular monitoring, like high blood pressure.

Can I pass the exam if I have a sleep apnea diagnosis?

Yes, provided your condition is effectively managed and you provide proof of compliance with your treatment, such as a CPAP usage report covering the last 90 days from your device.

What are the standard vision and hearing requirements?

Drivers must have at least 20/40 visual acuity in each eye and a field of vision of at least 70 degrees. Hearing must be sufficient to perceive a forced whisper at a distance of five feet in at least one ear.

What happens if I am medically disqualified during the exam?

If you do not meet the standards, the examiner will explain the reasons. In many cases, you may return for re-evaluation once an underlying health issue is addressed or after obtaining a formal medical waiver.
